What is the e.s.o.l. program about?
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (E.S.O.L.) program at Godley Station serves all students who are learning English as a foreign language. Each new student whose parents or guardians indicate a home language other than English is screened for English fluency to determine placement in the program. Our current school population represents 11 different countries and speaks 13 different languages.
E.S.O.L. instruction addresses listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills needed for academic achievement in language arts, math, social studies, science, and social interaction. In addition, students are introduced to American cultural concepts needed for school success while they are encouraged to value their first language and culture. Once screened, the ESOL Department will reach out to the parents of students who are eligible for pull out support services for consent. At Godley Station we have ELL students K-8, but we only offer pull out services for students K-5. Middle School students who are eligible for pull out services will be referred to our ESOL cluster site at West Chatham.
The responsibility for the whole education, both in language and academic content, is shared by regular classroom teachers and
English language assistance teachers alike. English instruction takes place in an E.S.O.L. classroom and in sheltered English classes. This program enables the English Language Learner (ELL) to become successful in the mainstream classroom, the schools, and the community.
E.S.O.L. eligible students are tested annually to measure students’ progress from year to year and to determine when they no longer need language instruction and assistance. Once ready to exit language assistance services, students are monitored for a two-year period to assure continuation of academic and language progress. Please refer to the "ALL ABOUT ACCESS TESTING" tab for more information.
