Why accommodate our ELL students?
ELL students should be provided equitable access to the curriculum through the use of accommodations. Why teachers should modify instruction for our ELL students?

Parent Notification of Accommodations
At the beginning of each school year, you will be notified of your child's accommodations for the year. The school's testing coordinator, teacher, and ESOL teacher meet to determine what accommodations would help your child be successful at school. The accommodations may change from year to year, but you will always be notified of the accommodations every year. If you feel that your child should receive less or more accommodations than the accommodations listed in your parent copy, please contact me immediately. Your feedback is very important and you are a part of our team effort to support your child, so we welcome your input. Once accomodations are in place for a student they can change throughout the year based on their progress or lack there of. You will always be notified if anything changes for your child's accommodations. Below are a list of the accommodations that are available to our ELL students. These accommodations are to be followed by the classroom teacher during instruction, and on all quizzes, tests, and assessments (classroom, MAP reading, MAP math, and GMAS.
Acceptable Accommodations for ELL's
Setting Accommodations
(Where the student will receive the accommodations for testing and instruction)
1. ESOL Classroom (if your child participates in the ESOL pull out program)
2. Small Group (your child will always be tested in a small group with the ESOL teacher)
3. Preferential Seating (if your child needs to sit closer to the teacher or to the board)
4. Individual or study carrel (to avoid distractions)
5. Individual administration (if your child needs to be tested one on one)
Presentation Accommodations
(How the test materials will be presented to the students)
6. Explain or paraphrase the directions for clarity (in English only)
7. Oral reading of test questions in English only
8. Oral reading of English Language Arts (ELA) passages in English only (this applies only to ELL's in their first year in the United States. This is not for students who
9. Repetition of directions (in English only)
Response Accommodations
(Materials that will help the student respond to questions on assessments)
10. Student marks answers in test booklet
11. Verbal response in English to Scribe
12. Word to Word Dictionary (for students within their first year in the United States)
